Let the celebrations be-gin! [MEDIA RELEASE]

For the third year running, local artisan spirits producer Imbibis has been recognised for its quality gins and brandy at the 2023 London Spirits Competition, receiving three medals in the coveted awards.

In 2022, Imbibis was proud to bring home two medals – a silver and a bronze. This year, the team has gone one better, with two silver medals (for their Awakening Gin and Passion Pink Gin), and a bronze (for the Single Barrel Brandy).

This is an impressive achievement for the boutique distillery which has only been in operation since November 2019.

Imbibis owners Maree and Jason Hannay were excited to not only to again been recognised by the prestigious competition, but to bring home an extra gong in 2023, proving their spirits can mix it, pun intended, with the best of them globally.

“We really respect the London Spirits Competition as they award spirits for their drinkability, which means they are judged on quality, value, and packaging,” Maree explained.

“While other competitions focus solely on technical competencies and distilling prowess, these awards focus on all-round excellence and the whole consumption experience, which is really what discerning spirit drinkers care about,” she added.

And it’s not just about what the consumer thinks, but about how the spirit is viewed by the liquor industry. The awards single out and shine the spotlight on the spirit brands that consumers really want to buy and have a clear market value for trade buyers.

“To win an award, you need to have a top-quality spirit that offers both the trade and the consumer great value for money,” Jason explained. “It needs to look good and truly stand out on the shelf in an outlet or in a bar.”

A big year for Imbibis

2022 was a massive year for Imbibis’, with several innovative new spirits created and launched, including their Heritage City Gin (a nod to the distillery’s hometown of Ipswich), Jacaranda Gin (boasting a striking purple hue), and Heritage City Rum (their very first rum).

“It has been a big 12 months for Imbibis, and receiving this recognition confirms that we are well and truly on the right path with our range of artisan spirits,” Jason added. “We have big plans for 2023, and these medals will help the Imbibis brand to shine even more.”

Spirits entered into the London Spirits Competition are judged on the basis of three primary criteria – quality, value and packaging – and then scored on a 100-point scale. Spirits that scored 90+ points were awarded gold medals, while spirits that scored 76 to 89 points were awarded silver medals, and bronze medals were awarded to spirits that scored between 65 and 75 points.

The extremely qualified judges, the chance to compete with thousands of excellent spirits from around the world and the stringent judging criteria of quality, value and packaging makes an award from the London Spirits Competition a coveted one.

This is the third year in a row that Imbibis has been acknowledged at the competition, taking home two silver medals in 2022 and 2021.
